KUSOA Organizes a National Seminar on Media Ethics

The Department of Languages and Mass Communication at Kathmandu University (KU) organized a one-day national seminar on "Media Ethics" on March 23, 2014. The seminar brought together a number of distinguished academics, scholars and practicing journalists actively involved in the field, and led to a very engaging discussion a variety of issues pertinent to the topic of media ethics. The day-long seminar was divided into three parts. The inaugural session, chaired by Prof. Dr. Mahesh Banskota, Dean, KUSOA, began with a welcome speech by Dr. Nirmala Mani Adhikari, Coordinator of Media Studies program at KUSOA, which highlighted the theme of the seminar and its relevance. It was followed with addresses by Mr. Borna BahadurKarki, Chairperson of Press Council Nepal, Mr. Shiva Gaunle, President, Federation of Nepali Journalists and Ms. Babita Basnet, Editor, Ghatana ra Bichar weekly and President of Media Advocacy Group. Prof. P. Kharel, Head of the Central Department of Journalism and Mass Communication, TU, delivered a key note address in which he shed light on significant concerns associated with the theories and practices in the field of media ethics. The session closed with an address by the chair of the session,Prof. Dr. Mahesh Banskota. The inaugural session was followed by a screening of two short movies produced by the students of Media Studies at KU. The first session of the day, chaired by Mr. Kundan Aryal, Lecturer, TU, proceeded with presentation of academic papers on the various aspects of media ethics by Dr. Govinda Sharan Upadhyaya, Visiting Faculty, KUSOA, Mr. Sudarshan Prasad Dahal, Asst. Professor, KUSOA,Mr. Raghu Mainali, Visiting Faculty, KUSOA, and Dr. Sudhamshu Dahal, Asst. Professor, KUSOA. Mr. L.D. Pant, Visiting Faculty, KUSOA and Mr. TaranathDahal, President, Freedom Forum commented on the papers. The session ended with an engaging discussion between the paper presenters and the participants. The second session of the day included a panel discussion on the issue of media ethics. The session was chaired by Mr. Shreeram Singh Basnet, Chief Editor, National News Agency, and included Mr. Kunda Dixit, Visiting Faculty, KUSOA, Ms. Nirmala Sharma, President, Sancharika Samuha, Mr. Tirtha Koirala, Chief Editor, Kantipur TV, Dr. Mahendra Bista, Chief Editor, Image Channel, and Mr. J.B. Biswokarma, Researcher and Freelance Journalist as the panelists. The seminar was attended by students and faculties of KU, as well as a large number of academics, scholars and journalists.

Events

Research Methodology Workshop
HNRSC- KU organized three days Research Methodology Workshop on 24-26 March, 2008 for its master and PhD students. Training on data gathering tools and techniques, scientific writing and data interpretation was given to the students during this workshop.
Conflict Management Workshop
HNRSC together with Global Majority (INGO) organized a two-day workshop on "Conflict Management" in March 2008. Trainings on development of negotiation skills, conflict resolution and effective communication were given to HNRSC students by international experts.
GLOPP Workshop
HNRSC and University of Zurich jointly organized a three-day e-learning course on Globalisation and Livelihood Option for People living in Poverty (GLOPP) from in January 2009. Faculties and students from HNRSC and DEVS participated in this workshop.
